This question was taken up in great seriousnes by Bertrand Russell and Alfred Lord Whitehead in their magnum opus Principia Mathematica where they attempted to place all of mathematics (at least arithmetic) under logic. They succeeded to prove that 1 + 1 = 2 on page 362. This book is unbelievably difficult to understand.
