To work out proportions of chemicals to react fully, you need calculations based on atomic weights. Molecules have 3-dimensional shapes, so you need geometry to understand and calculate now these will behave and fit together. The speed of mixing of leaking gases that could form explosive mixtures involves maths. Did you know that gases pass right through the rubber skin of balloons, the gas molecules squeezing through gaps between the long chains of rubber molecules.
