Why is 1x1 1 but 2x2 4?

Notice that...

0 x 0 = 0   and

1 x 1 = 1

So, we might assume that multiplying any number by itself just returns that number to us...

But if 2 x 2 = 2   divide both side by 2...so we have

2 = 2/2

2 =1   Mmmm...that can't be true...!!!
