Historically...pi used to be written as "pie." But then, the mathematicians had to "borrow" the "e" so that they could - irrationally on their part, I might add - represent another number.
And later - about the time of the French Revolution - the mathematicians looked down upon all the "pies" that had lost their "e's" and said, "Let them eat cake.'
This bit of history is generally deleted in current-day math texts.
