Why is the answer not 8? (-1)^2-5(-1)+3=9
$$\\(-1)^2-5(-1)+3\\\\
(-1)^2=-1*-1=+1$$
and
5(-1)=5*-1=-5
so we have
$$\\(-1)^2-5(-1)+3 \\\\
= (-1)^2-5*(-1)+3 \\\\
= +1-5*(-1)+3 \\\\
= +1--5+3 \\\\
= +1+5+3 \\\\
=9$$
Does that help? If you want something explained more, make sure that you ask :)
