The perimeter of a scalene triangle is 16 inches.  The length of the longest side is 4 inches less than 2 times the shortest side.  The length of the other side is 2 inches more than the shortest side.  Find the lengths of the sides of the triangle.

Let x be the length of the shortest triangle. Hence, we know that the length of the longest side is 2x - 4. We also know that the length of the other side is x + 2. Hence:

2x - 4 + x + 2 + x = 16,

4x - 2 = 16,

4x = 18,

x = 9/2

x = 4.5

Hence, the shortest length is 4.5. From this, you should be able to figure out the lengths of the other side on your own.
