Let A be the original amount......and we know that....
A - 18 = (1/4)A add18 to both sides, subtract (1/4)A from both sides
(3/4)A = 18 multiply both sides by 4/3
A = 18(4/3) = 24
This makes sense 24 - 18 = 6 and 6 is 1/4 of 24....!!!
