I'm bad at word problems, so...

Please solve with all steps included (you don't have to do them all ;D)

1. Your test scores for the semester are 89, 86, and 87. What score do you need on your next test to raise your average to a 90?

2. A shopper's discount club charges a monthly fee of $15 and sells gasoline for $2.05 per gallon. The gas station across the street sells gasoline for $2.35 per gallo  and charges no fee. How many gallons of gasoline would you have to buy in one month in order to spend the same amount at either store?

3. You are planting a vegetable garden with 10 rows. If it took 24 minutes to plant the first 3 rows, how long will it take to plant all 10 rows of the garden? (Set up and solve a proportion)

1. Your test scores for the semester are 89, 86, and 87. What score do you need on your next test to raise your average to a 90?

Here's one way of doing this......to average 90, we need 4 test scores of 90 each  = 360 points

The total number of points that you have so far is just  89 + 86+ 87  = 262

So...to get 360 points, on your last test you need to make a  [ 360 - 262 ]  = 98

Call the number of gallons, G...so we have the following

                 First Station                                              =                                Second  Station

(Price Per Gallon) * G  + Monthly fee                       =                               (Price Per Gallon) * G

(2.05) * G   +   15                                                      =                               (2.35)G

Subtract   (2.05)* G     from both sides

15   =    (2.35)G - (2.05)G    simplify

15  =   .30G          divide both sides by .30G

50  = G    .....so 50 gallons equalizes the costs

3. You are planting a vegetable garden with 10 rows. If it took 24 minutes to plant the first 3 rows, how long will it take to plant all 10 rows of the garden? (Set up and solve a proportion)

Call the total time T Minutes.....and we have the following proportion

24 Minutes / 3 rows   = T Minutes / 10 rows

24 / 3  = T  / 10         multiply both sides by 10

10 * 24   / 3   = T

240 / 3   = T  =   80 minutes

P.S. -  another way to see this is that if it takes you 24 minutes to plant 3 rows.....then each row must take 8 minutes....thus.....10 rows  * 8 minutes per row = 80 minutes  ......
