x^1/2+1/6-3=2x^1/2 solve for x?

First, let's subtract  x^1/2   from both sides to 'clean it up' a bit

1/6 - 3  = x^(1/2)   then do the math on the left side

- 2 5/6 = sqrt x

-17/6 = sqrt x     Square both sides

289/36 =x           (NOTE that 'x' has TWO sq roots   - 17/6    AND + 17/6)   

This equation only works when sqrt x = -17/6
