Find x such that the distance between the points is 15.

(x,11)(-8,-1)

OK...so we have

√[(-8-x)2 + (-1 -11)2] = 15    let's square both sides to get rid of the radical

[(-8-x)2 + (-1 -11)2] = 225     simplify

64 + 16x + x2 + 144 = 225

x2 + 16x + 208 = 225

x2 + 16x - 17 = 0           factor

(x - 1) (x +17) = 0

So

x  = 1    or  x = -17
