x + 2y = 1        rearrange this as     x = 1 - 2y     ......now...........substitute this into the first equation for x   and we have......

[ 1 - 2y] + 5y  = 13   simpliify

1 + 3y  = 13       subtract 1 from both sides

3y  = 12      divide both sides by 3

y =4
