To do this we will need to know the values of x and y.  My favorite way to do this it to rearrange equation 2 so that it says y=2-4x.  We can then substitute this into equation one and simplify as follows:

6x-3(2-4x)=30

6x-6+12x=30

18x-6=30

18x=36

x=2

 

With this information in hand we can subsititue it into the first equation i mentioned y=2-4(2)=-6

Therefore x+y=2+(-6)=-4
