Brittany does have a big brain but she made a mistake.   

x squared subtracted from 1 equals 24

means

$$\\1-x^2=24\\
-x^2=23\\
x^2=-23\\
$there are no real solutions to this but the imaginary solution is$\\
x=\pm\sqrt{23}\;i$$

$$\\(8^{-3})^5=8^{-15}=\frac{1}{8^{15}}$$
