Why can you not study 4 to 5 hours a day?  

Lets think about this:  there are 24*7 = 168 hours in a week.

Many year 12 students work but most only need to work enough to cover a little social life so that is about one shift.

So that is one night a week for work 6 hours.  One night a week for play 6 hours.  About 30 hours a week in school but  not all of that is in the classroom.

Say 8*7=56 hours a week in bed.

What are we up to here:  6+6+30+56 = 98 hours      168-98= 70 hours left so far.

Say you spend another 5 hours a week travelling, 14 hours on eating and normal home duties. 5 hours a week on family commitments.  That is anouher 24 hours gone.    70-24 = 46 hours left.

46/7 = 6.6 hours per day left.

If you study and do homework for 5 hours a day that still leaves 1.6 hours a day (on average) for texting, playing computer games, watching TV, fighting with your siblings and annoying your parents.

WHERE IS THE PROBLEM.   I DO NOT SEE ONE   

Just divide by 12 because there are 12 inches in a foot :)

A wooden plank is $5$ feet long and $1\frac{1}{2}$ inches thick. To make the plank $1\frac{1}{8}$ inches thick, a carpenter removes the same thickness of wood from the top and bottom of the plank. How many inches does the carpenter remove from the top of the plank? Express your answer as a common fraction.
