(11−3x)+(7+4y)i=−17+i

Setting the real number parts equal, we have

(11 - 3x)   = -17     subtract 11 from both sides

-3x = -28     divide both sides by -3

x = 28/3

Setting the imaginary parts equal, we have

7 + 4y =  1        subtract 7 from both sides

4y  = -6        divide both sides by 4

y = -6/4  = -3/2
