If we have

3z^2+14z-5  =    0        factor

(3z - 1) (z + 5)  = 0     set each factor to 0 and we have that

z = 1/3   or    z = -5

Set the factor '(-5 + -1z)' equal to zero and attempt to solve:

Simplifying

 -5 + -1z = 0

Solving -5 + -1z = 0

Move all terms containing z to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '5' to each side of the equation

. -5 + 5 +

-1z = 0 + 5

Combine like terms: -5 + 5 =

0 0 + -1z =

0 + 5 -1z = 0 + 5

Combine like terms:

0 + 5 = 5 -1z = 5

Divide each side by '-1'

. z = -5

Simplifying

z = -5

Solve for z: 3 z^2+14 z-5 = 0 The left hand side factors into a product with two terms: (z+5) (3 z-1) = 0 Split into two equations: z+5 = 0 or 3 z-1 = 0 Subtract 5 from both sides: z = -5 or 3 z-1 = 0 Add 1 to both sides: z = -5 or 3 z = 1 Divide both sides by 3: Answer: | | z = -5              or z = 1/3
