4x-y=3 6x-2y=5

One way to solve this problem, is to use the method of linear combinations:

4x  -  y  =  3     --->   multiply by -2     --->     -8x + 2y  =  -6

6x - 2y  =  5                                       --->      6x  - 2y  =  5

Add down the columns:                                  -2x          =  -1

Divide by -2:                                                            x  =  -1/-2   --->   x  =  1/2

Replace this value into the first equation:  4x - y  =  3   --->   4(1/2) - y  =  3  

                                                                               --->   2 - y  =  3   --->   -y  =  1   --->   y  =  -1
