Looking at the denominators: 3, 2, 6, 8   --->   a common denominator is 24.

Multiply each term by 24:

(5x/3)(24) = 40x     (1/2)(24) = 12     (1x/6)(24) = 4x     (3/8)(24) = 9

So, the equation is equal to:  40x - 12  =  4x + 9

Subtract 4x from both sides: 36x - 12  =  9

Add 12 to both sides:                  36x  =  21

Divide both sides by 36:                  x  =  7/12
