If it takes me 20 minutes to walk 1,408 yards and I have to walk 0.5 miles from my house to get to the bus stop and the bus is scheduled to get to the bus stop at 12:11pm, what time should I leave my house if I want to get to the bus stop 10 minutes before the bus is scheduled to get to the bus stop?  Please show how you get to your answer.

1 mile = 1760 yds....so 0.5 mile  =  880 yds

So....we can use a proportion to find out how long - in x minutes - it will take you to walk 880 yds

20 / 1408  =   x / 880      cross-multiply

880 * 20  = 1408 * x

17600  = 1408 * x       divide both sides by 1408

12.5 min  =  x = time to walk  0.5 miles

Since you want to get there 10 min early,  you need to be there at 12:01

And 12.5 min before this =  11:48: 30 AM  is the time you should leave your house
