When comparing two means they must be independent of each other, that is there must be no relationship between the subjects in each sample. Also, the populations from which the samples were obtained must be normally distributed, the standard deviation must be known or the sample sizes must be greater than 30. A new version of the z value is calculated when comparing two means.
