whats the difference between U•V and U X V?

If U and V are numbers, then "dot" and "cross" both mean the usual multiplication operator.

If U and V are three dimensional vectors, however, then the former is the "dot product" and the latter is the "cross product". The explanations of these are described in gory detail elsewhere so I won't repeat. Do a Google search or look on Wikipedia for the details.
