Alan, Ben and Carl shared some marbles. Alan had 1/3 of what Ben and Carl had. Ben had 1/5 of what Alan and Carl had. Alan had 24 fewer marbles than Carl. How many marbles did they have altogether?
Let Carl had X marbles
Marbles with Alan = X-24
Let marbles with ben = Y
Marbles with Alan = (X+Y)/3
X-24 = (X+Y)/3
3X-72 = X+Y
2X-Y= 72...(1)
Marbles with Ben =(2X-24)/5
5Y= 2X-24
2X-5Y= 24...(2)
Solving (1) & (2)
Y= 12
X= 42
Total marbles with Alan = 18
Total marbles with all of them = 12+18+42
= 72
