Ariffin sold some comic books, kept 3/8 of the remainder for Ragu and Faiz and donated the rest. If the number of comic books sold was twice the number of comic books donated, what fraction of the comic books was sold?

Ariffin sold some comic books, kept 3/8 of the remainder for Ragu and Faiz and donated the rest. If the number of comic books sold was twice the number of comic books donated, what fraction of the comic books was sold?

Call the original number, N

Call the number sold = S

And the number that Ragu and Faiz  received = (3/8)(N - S)

And the number donated =  N - S - (3/8)(N - S)

And S  = 2 [  N - S - (3/8)(N - S)  ]

So we have

S = 2 [ N - S - (3/8)N + (3/8)S]

S  = 2 [(5/8)N - (5/8)S]

S = (10/8)N - (10/8)S

S = (5/4)N - (5/4)S     add (5/4)S to both sides

(9/4)S  = (5/4)N    multiply through by (4/9)

S = (4/9)(5/4)N

S = (5/9)N

So...the number sold was 5 / 9  of the  total

cool cool cool

Ariffin sold some comic books, kept 3/8 of the remainder for Ragu and Faiz and donated the rest. If the number of comic books sold was twice the number of comic books donated, what fraction of the comic books was sold?
Let total number of books=T
Let the number sold=S, then T-S=Remainder, or R
Set R=1, then we have:
3/8R for Ragu.
5/8R donated, but we have:
S=2(5/8R)=1.25R=1.25, since R=1. Now we substitute:
T-1.25=1, or T=2.25. So we have:
1.25/2.25=5/9 of total books sold
1 - 5/9=4/9 of given to Ragu and Faiz and donations
3/8 X 4/9=1/6 of T books kept by Ragu and Faiz
5/8 X 4/9=5/18 of T books given to donations.
So, in concreate terms, if there were 90 books, then:
90 X 5/9 =50 books were sold. That would leave 40 books.
3/8 X 40=15 books kept by Ragu and Faiz
5/8 X 40=25 books given to donations.
