The circumference of a pasture is 34 meters, where the width is 4 meters shorter than the long side. Set it up in an equation and figure out how long the sides are.

I think you mean "perimeter," not circumference....

 

(1/2) Perimeter  = W + L      .....and L  = W + 4...so we have....

 

17 = W + L

 

17 = W + [ W + 4 ]

 

17  =2W + 4      subtract 4 from both sides

 

13  = 2W   divide by 2

 

6.5 m  = W         and L  =  6.5 + 4   =  10.5 m
