square both sides of the equation to get d 2 = l 2 + h 2 + w 2

rearrange the equation to get w 2 = d 2 - l 2 - h 2

Put the known values of d, l and h into the right-hand side and take the square root of the result. Mathematically, there will be two values for w, one the negative of the other.

If you are not very confident with algebra you might prefer to do the substitution first.

18 = sqrt( 4+9+w 2)
18 = sqrt( 13+w 2)
Now you really do have to square both sides
324 = 13 + w 2
311 = w 2
w = + or- sqrt(311)
