Tell if the measures 25, 14, and 13 can be side lengths of a triangle. If so, classify the triangle as acute, right, or obtuse.

Don't think so, because: 13+14 = 27, which is greater than 25. The sum of the 2 sides must be less than 25.

Sorry, Guest ...that is not correct....if the sum of any two sides is greater than the remaining side, we have a triangle......this is so, here

 

Use the Law of Cosines to classify the triangle.....check the angle opposite the longest side

 

[14^2 + 13^2 - 25^2] / [ 2(13) (14)  ] = cos θ

 

So

 

arcos [14^2 + 13^2 - 25^2] / [ 2(13) (14)  ] =

 

arcos (-5/7)  =  θ  ≈  135.6°  =  obtuse
