Alula has the following quiz scores: 17, 10, 9, 14, 16, 8 and 10. What must the sum of her next three quiz scores be in order to have an overall average of 14?

(17 + 10 +9+`4+16+8+10 + x + x + x) / 10 = 14     solve for x      the SUM of her scores must be 3*x

(17 + 10  + 9 + 14 + 16 + 8 +10 +  m)  /  10  =  14      where m  is  the sum of the next three scores

 

Multiply  both sides  by  10.....simplify the rest

 

84  + m =  140  

 

m =  140 -   84   =    56
