How can you tell 22/7 is rational or irrational without finding the decimal expansion?

22/7  =  3.142857 142857 ... (with the block of digits repeating forever).

This is a rational number; the definition of a rational number is a number that is the quotient of two integers (positive or negative whole numbers) and the denominator cannot be zero. Since both 22 and 7 are whole numbers, 22/7 is a rational number.

When written as a decimal, a rational number either terminates (7/2 = 3.5) or repeats forever (like 22/7).

NOTE

$${\frac{{\mathtt{22}}}{{\mathtt{7}}}}$$      IS NOT   $${\mathtt{\pi}}$$

Sometimes it is used as an approximation for pi    :)
