A passenger plane left Singapore and flew south at an average speed of 215 mph. Some time later a jet left flying in the same direction but at an average speed of 473 mph. After flying for three hours the jet caught up with the passenger plane. Find the number of hours the passenger plane flew before the jet caught up.
Let h be the number of hours the first plane flew before the second plane began its flight......since they flew the same distance at the end, we have
215h + 215(3) = 473(3) simplfy
215h + 645 = 1419 subtract 645 from both sides
215h = 774 divide both sides by 215
h = 774 / 215 = 3.6 hours
