Ok so I don't get this thing that's supposedly supposed to be super simple.
To rename fractions with a common denominator
For example: 2/3 - 1/2 = t
If you could explain how to do it I would be very grateful
do it like a 6th grader would.
You have to convert the fractions so that they have a 'common denominator' ...which is a number that both of the denominators will divide into evenly.
You have two denominators in this problem 3 and 2 Can you think of a number that BOTH 3 and 2 will go into evenly?
ONE way is to multiply them together (this works well for SMALL denominators like 3 and 2)
3 x 2 = 6 SO '6' is a good and easy choice
Let's start with the first fraction 2/3
If you multiply the first fraction by 2/2 (which is '1')
you get 2/3 x 2/2 = 4/6 and you have converted it to a fraction with the common denominator '6' on the bottom
so 2/3 = 4/6
Now for the SECOND fraction 1/2 .... multiply it by 3/3 to get 3/6.....now you can substitute these values to solve the equation:
4/6 - 3/6 = t
(4-3)/6 = t
1/6 = t and you're done !
