Write the equation of a line that goes through the points (1, 4) and (2, 2).

 (1, 4) and (2, 2)

 

We need to find the slope of the line between these two points.....this is given by :

 

[2-4] / [2-1]  = -2/1   = -2

 

So.......using either point and the slope, we can write the equation by using the point-slope form

 

y - 4  =  -2 ( x - 1)   simplify

 

y - 4  = -2x + 2      add 4 to both sides

 

y = -2x + 6     .... and this is in slope-intercept form
