I was always taught rise over run where rise is how far the graph goes up and run is how far it travels.

The rate of change is the slope.

 

First, find any two points on the line.

 

For my example, I will use (5, 3) and (10, 9)

 

Then, subtract the second point's y-value from the first point's. This is your numerator.

 

9-3=6

 

Next, do the same for the x-values. This will be your denominator.

 

10-5=5

 

Now we put it together and get a slope of 6/5, or 1 1/5.

 

In conclusion, the slope of my example points, (5, 3) and (10, 9), is 1 1/5.
