The store owner gave a 35 percent discount, yet they still had to pay $247 dollars for the camera.  What was the orginal price of the camera?

Let the original price of the camera =C, then:

C - [35% x C] = $247

C - 0.35C = $247

0.65C = $247  divide both sides by 0.65

C =247 / 0.65

C = $380.00 - original price of the camera.

original price  -  35% of original price   =   $247

                                           Let the original price be  p  dollars.

p  -  35%  of  p   =   247

p  -  0.35 * p   =   247

                                           Factor  p  out of the terms on the left side.

p( 1 - 0.35 )   =   247

p( 0.65 )   =   247

                                           Divide both sides of the equation by  0.65 .

p   =   247 / 0.65

p   =   380
