If x + 6/x = y + 6/y, is it necessarily true that x = y?

No, beacuse if you take everything to the comon denominator, you get  (x^2+6)/x=(y^2+6)/y. Then if you mulytiply everything by xy you get yx^2+6y=xy^2+6x, so they dont have to be eaqual.
