how do i calculate the domain of log((x+1)/(x-1))?

We cannot take the log of a negative number or 0

Notice that any value in (-∞, -1) is OK

Notice that values in [-1, 1] either give us something that is negative or undefined

And note that any value in (1, ∞) is OK

So, the domain is just (-∞, -1) U (1, ∞)
