How do I go about using the formala for light intensity (1/d2)?

It's just the Inverse Square law.

If you double the distance from a radiating object you will get  a quarter of the radiation.

At four times the distance you will get 1/ (4^2)    or  1/16 of the radiation.

So if the radiation at a distance    d      is      R

then at distance  2d      the radiation   is       R/ (2d)^2     =  R/4d^2
