16 + 1/4   - 17      notice that we can rewrite this as

16 - 17  + 1/4   =

-1  + 1/4  =

-3/4

Here's a second way

17  = 68/4

16 + 1/4   =  65/4   ....so....

65/4  - 68/4    =

-3/4

I see  what you did but the answer I got from the online problem is -0.75

and so it is 16 1/4-17 sixteen one fourths minus seventeen. I want to understand how they got the answer -0.75, thank you for the reply though.
