-3x +7y = -16     ...(1)

-9x +5y = 16      ...(2)

Multiply equation (1) by 3 to get the coefficient of the x term the same as in equation (2):

-9x + 21y = -48   ...(3)

Now subtract equation (2) from equation (3) term by term (the x's vanish):

21y - 5y = -48 - 16

Simplify

16y = -64

Divide both sides by 16

y = -4

Substitute this back into equation (1)

-3x + 7*(-4) = -16

-3x -28 = -16

Add 28 to both sides

-3x = 12

Divide both sides by -3

x = -4
