The test scores for an AP Statistics class have the distribution N(85, 5). How high would a student need to score to be in the top twenty percent?

You would need a z-score of approximately 0.842 to separate the top 20% from the bottom 89%.

0.842  =  (z - 85)/5     --->     z > 89
