Pi is used to calculate the circumference of circles, the circumference being all around the circle. You get this by multiplying pi by the diameter which is straight down the circle, or multiplying the radius, by 2; the radius is from any point on the circle to the center of the circle. Therefore, the radius * 2 equals the diameter. Then you multiply the diameter by pi, which is an ongoing irrational number that has no end and no repeating pattern. This starts out as 3.141592 and goes on literally forever. You can probably abbreviate it to 3.14, depending on how you're using it. So if the diameter of a circle is 5 in, then you would multiply 5 by pi and the circumference would be approximately 15.7
