Question: A lorry is 60% longer than a minibus. By how many percent is the minibus shorter than the lorry?

minimbus length/lorry length = minibus length/1.6*minibus length → 0.625 

 

The minibus length is 62.5% of the lorry length.

The easiest way to visualize this is to attach some numbers to the vehicles:

If we assume that the minibus is 25 feet long, then the lorry is:

25 x 1.60 =40 feet long,

40 - 25 =15 - feet longer that the lorry is than a minus. Or, the minibus is 15 feet shorter than the lorry.

Therefore: 15/40 =0.375 x 100 =37.5% that the minibus is shorter than a lorry.

Since the minibus is only 62.50% of the lorry length, then it follows that:

1 - .625 =.375 x 100 =37.5% shorter than the lorry. Which is the same thing as shown above.
