The length of one leg of a right triangle is 8 ft. The lengthof the hypotenuse is 4 feet longer than the other leg.Find the length of the hypotenuse and the other leg.

We have this :

 

8^2 + L^2   = (L + 4)^2      simplify

 

64 + L^2   = L^2 + 8L + 16     subtract L^2 from both sides

 

64  = 8L + 16        subtract 16 from  both sides

 

48  = 8L      divide both sides by 8

 

6 ft = L    and this is the length of the other leg.......and the hypotenuse  is 4 feet more = 10 ft
