A bird flies from the bottom of a canyon that is 91.40 feet below sea level to a nest that is 631.70 feet above sea level. What is the difference in elevation between the bottom of the canyon and the bird's nest?

It's just the difference in height. The bird is at the bottom of the canyon 91.4 feet bellow. So it needs to fly up that high to hit sea level zero. If it continues flying up to 631.7, that's added elivation.

91.40 + 631.70 = 723.1 feet.

The bottom of the canyon, 91.40 feet below sea level, can be expressed as  -91.40.

The nest at 631.70 fett above sea level can be expressed as  +631.70, or just  631.70..

To find the distance between them, subtract the lower from the upper:

      631.70 - -91.40     =     631.70 + 91.40     =     713.10 feet.
