Hey guys,

Got a quick question related to sound.

"A stone is dropped in a mine shaft 200 meters deep. If the temperature is 23 degrees Celcius, how much time will it take to hear the stone hitting the bottom from when it was released?"

Formula used in lesson:

velocity of sound= 332 + 0.6(Temperature)

The time it takes to drop is given by

-200 = -4.9t2      divide both sides by -4.9

200/4.9 = t2    take the positive square root

t = 6.39 sec

The time it takes the sound to return is given by

D / R = T ..... so.....

200/[332 + 0.6(23)] = .58 sec

So ( 6.39 + .58) = 6.97 sec
