If the sum of -4 and the opposite of a number is multiplied by -3, the result is 6 less than the product of the number and 2. What is the number?

Please show your work. I need the formula more than I need the answer.

-3(-4+x)=2x-6

Distribute

12-3x=2x-6

Add 3x to both sides.

12=5x-6

Add 6 to both sides.

18=5x

Divide by 5 on both sides.

x=3.6

Let the number  = N      and its opposite = -N    ......so we have

-3 [ -4  +  -N ]  + 6 = 2N     simplify

12 + 3N + 6  = 2N

18 + 3N  = 2N     subtract 3N from both sides

18 = -N       so....this is the opposite...and the number must be - 18

Check

-3 [ -4 + 18]  + 6 = 2(-18)   ????

-3 [ 14] + 6  = -36  ?????

-42 + 6  = -36  ????

-36  = -36

cool cool cool
