Solve for (x,y) in the system of operations.

          2x + y = -7

            x = 4 + 2y

Collect the terms in x and y on the same side:

2x + y = -7       (1)

x - 2y = 4         (2)

Multiply the first equation by 2

4x + 2y = -14    (3)

Add (2) and (3) term by term:

5x = -10

so x = -2

Substitute this back into (1)

2*(-2) + y = -7

-4 + y = - 7

 y = -3
