A student said that since 51÷3=17, then 0.051÷3 is 0.17.

is the student 's reasoning correct? Give reasons for your answer.

0.017 is  $${\frac{{\mathtt{17}}}{{\mathtt{1\,000}}}}$$

 

0.17 is   $${\frac{{\mathtt{17}}}{{\mathtt{100}}}}$$

 

They are completely different!  0.17 is 10 times bigger than 0.017!!!!!

.051 / 3   = .017

So, the student is not correct......
