I. x + y = 16

II. x = 8 + y

Substitute x in equation I.

8 + y + y = 16

8 + 2y = 16     |-8 on both sides

2y = 16 - 8

2y = 8             | : 2   on both sides        

y = 4      

Substitute y in equation I      

x + 4 = 16       | -4 on both sides      

x = 16 - 4

x = 12

y = 4

x = 16 - 4 = 12
