Start by multiplying out the brackets on both sides of the equation:

0.3(6 + p) = 0.4(8 - p)

0.3*6 +0.3*p = 0.4*8 -0.4*p

1.8 + 0.3*p = 3.2 - 0.4*p

Add 0.4*p to both sides and subtract 1.8 from both sides

0.3*p + 0.4*p = 3.2 - 1.8

Collect similar terms

0.7*p = 1.4

Divide both sides by 0.7

p = 1.4/0.7

p = 2
