The area of a desk top is 8 ¾ square feet. If the length is 3 ½ft., find the width.
Area = Length x Width....so we have
8+3/4 = 3+1/2 x W
8.75 = 3.5 x W divide both sides by 3.5
8.75 / 3.5 = W = 2.5 ft.
The formula is area equals length times width...
$${\mathtt{A}} = {\mathtt{L}}{\mathtt{\,\times\,}}{\mathtt{W}}$$
plug in the info u already know...
8-3/4 = 3-1/2 • W
Make all fractions improper...
35/4 = 7/2 • W
Divide 7/2 on both sides...
35/4 ÷ 7/2 = W
5/2 = W
or you could put it as a mixed fraction: 2-1/2.
The width of the table os 2-1/2 feet wide.
That settles it....our select committee composed of Ethan, BrittanyJ and Yours Truly has examined this issue in depth.....the desk appears to be 2.5 ft wide.......give or take.......
I posted, then a notification appeared that you had answered! Maybe I should let you have it. You did the long explanation and I did the short answer. Maybe we should be equal?
Mmmmmm...it appears that one committe member is doubting his own contibution to the project......we'll let you slide this time, Ethan.....(just be careful) .......
